Position Description: 

The Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County is seeking a bi-lingual (Spanish) attorney with a passion for economic justice and immigrants’ rights to join our LIBRE Project. LIBRE (www.thelibreproject.org) is a multi-agency collaboration that educates immigrants and their families about their rights and eligibility for safety net benefits and immigration relief, and provides legal advocacy on their behalf.

Organization: LASSMC (www.legalaidsmc.org) is a dynamic and collegial non-profit law firm serving San Mateo County residents and is recognized as a leading legal services provider in California. A non-LSC funded legal services program with a 55 year history of collaboration and innovative programs, LASSMC is able to engage in class action litigation and to provide assistance regardless of immigration status in areas of basic need including health, housing, safety-net benefits, some consumer law, and freedom from violence.

Responsibilities: Advise and represent low-income San Mateo County immigrants and their families on immigration relief and access to safety net benefits. Pursue all appropriate legal strategies, including administrative advocacy and litigation, in accordance with Legal Aid’s priorities. Engage in outreach and education efforts in partnership with local community groups to educate low-income immigrants about their rights, potential immigration remedies, and eligibility for safety net benefits. The ideal applicant is detail oriented, compassionate, and has some experience in immigration law. The candidate must have a demonstrated commitment to public interest law and prior experience working with low-income, immigrant communities.

Requirements: 

Required Qualifications:
- Active membership in the California State Bar
- Demonstrated commitment to public interest law
- Excellent writing, public speaking, and communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work autonomously
- Oral and written fluency in Spanish
- Ability to drive and access to an automobile

Preferred:
- Bi-cultural background/experience
- Immigration/Government benefits law experience
- Community engagement experience
