Position Description:

The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence seeks an attorney to fill a Staff Attorney position with the organization. This is a rare opening in one of the nation’s most effective, cutting-edge public interest law practices.

The Brady Center is the nation’s leading non-profit public interest organization dedicated to preventing gun violence, and its legal team is dedicated to fighting in the courts to reduce gun deaths and injuries. Brady’s legal team reforms the gun industry through high-impact, cutting-edge liability actions, defends sensible gun laws, and challenges laws that restrict sound gun violence prevention efforts. Unlike many other public interest organizations, Brady attorneys actively litigate cases at every stage in courtrooms across the country.

The position primarily involves litigation, including identifying potential cases, conducting discovery, drafting briefs, arguing motions, and managing pro bono litigation teams. The work will also include some policy analysis and non-legal writing.

Responsibilities Include:
● helping litigate 1) liability suits representing gun violence victims to reform gun industry practices; 2) defense of gun laws, and 3) challenges to gun lobby laws, including working on (and leading, in some cases) factual and expert discovery, depositions, motions, briefs, trials, and appeals throughout the country;
● drafting amicus briefs in Second Amendment and other gun-related cases;
● analyzing, advising on, and summarizing federal, state, and local gun legislation;
● speaking with media, the public, victims, and lawmakers on gun issues;
● performing other legal and factual research and writing as needed.

Requirements:

Qualifications:
A law degree (J.D.) from an accredited law school and 2-6 years of legal experience, including managing discovery, working with clients, and writing sophisticated briefs. The ideal candidate will have an accomplished academic record, strong legal writing, research and verbal communications skills, litigation skills including taking depositions and arguing motions, a creative and able legal mind, and an interest in preventing deaths and injuries caused by guns. The job is located in Washington, D.C.
