Position Description: 

The Office of the Georgia Capital Defender has an opening for a full-time Mitigation Investigator, representing indigent defendants in state capital cases at the trial level. The Mitigation Investigator works with attorneys and fact investigators as part of a client team and is primarily responsible for conducting comprehensive fact-based investigations to develop and prepare evidence to be presented in the penalty phase of capital cases. The Mitigation Investigator identifies, locates and interviews a variety of witnesses; identifies, collects and reviews a vast array of records; identifies and analyzes issues in the case; prepares independent reports concerning the life history of the client, and assists attorneys in identifying appropriate expert witnesses, and preparing evidence and witnesses to present to the jury. The Mitigation Investigator must be able to organize and prioritize workload to manage cases efficiently; adjust to workload changes; work within a team and under stress to meet deadlines.

Requirements: 

Requirements: A master’s degree in social work, psychology or a related field, as well as at least two years of experience in criminal and/or capital litigation is preferred. Knowledge of social history and mental health issues in the context of capital trials is preferred. Applicants must hold a valid driver's license and be willing to travel extensively throughout Georgia and out of state. Spanish-speaking also a plus.
