Position Description: 

Greater Boston Legal Services (GBLS) seeks an experienced and energetic Grants Officer to join a creative team in raising resources to support civil legal aid and counsel for people who could not otherwise afford justice. The Grants Officer is primarily responsible for maintaining and growing a portfolio of foundation, corporate and government grants and contracts. The Grants Officer researches funding prospects, helps to design projects, writes applications for new and renewal funding, coordinates and attends meetings with funders, and prepares grant reports. The Grants Officer builds good relationships with foundation representatives and with GBLS’ attorneys and paralegals. The Grants Officer is encouraged to get to know GBLS’ work directly and to meet with GBLS advocates regularly.

The Grants Officer reports to the Director of Development and works on a team with the Communications Director/Grants Coordinator and GBLS Managing Attorneys on grant-related issues and Finance Department to develop grant budgets. In addition, the Grants Officer works in close contact with the entire development team on communications, events, the GBLS Annual Meeting, support for the GBLS’ Board of Directors on development initiatives, and other projects as needed.

Requirements: 

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree; should have a minimum of three (3) years’ experience prospecting, writing grant applications, reporting on grant results, and managing a grants portfolio; excellent writing and organizational skills; a strong personal work ethic and ability to manage diverse activities and meet critical deadlines with minimal supervision; proficiency in Raisers Edge is preferred, proficiency in PowerPoint, Excel and Word is required; and is passionate about and can effectively communicate the mission of civil legal aid. The ideal candidate is a creative problem-solver, who remains calm under pressure and works well as a flexible member of a dynamic team.
Preferred Experience: a background in legal or social justice work strongly preferred; experience in communications, and database management.
