Position Description: 

Organization: Bay Area Legal Aid's (BayLegal) mission is to provide high quality legal assistance regardless of a client's location, language, or disability. BayLegal is the largest provider of free civil legal services to low-income residents of the San Francisco Bay Area, with regional offices in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Mateo, San Francisco, and Santa Clara counties. BayLegal's 100+ staff members provide wraparound legal services in housing preservation, domestic violence and sexual assault prevention, economic security, consumer protection, and healthcare access.

Position: We seek an attorney to represent the legal needs of low-income survivors of domestic violence. The attorney will primarily focus on representing the family and immigration law needs of domestic violence survivors, and may also be called upon to address the housing and public benefits needs of our domestic violence survivor clients. The attorney in this position will regularly appear in court at hearings and trials; identify systemic issues affecting our clients' rights and work collaboratively to address them; perform community education and outreach; and recruit, train, and supervise volunteers. The position also involves assisting self-represented litigants with preparing, filing, and serving forms for all aspects of litigation under the Domestic Violence Prevention Act, including restraining orders, custody, visitation, child and spousal support, and other miscellaneous requests for orders. We seek candidates who are comfortable and adept working in a litigation and negotiation-rich environment.

Requirements: 

 Requirements for the Successful Candidate: 

  •  California State Bar membership with two to four years of litigation experience, including trials, evidentiary hearings, depositions, and motion practice 
  •  Experience with immigrant communities and survivors of domestic violence
  •  Excellent oral and written communications skills
  •  Ability to provide culturally appropriate services to diverse communities
  •  Experience with family law is preferred
  •  Self-directed and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
  •  Ability to anticipate what needs to be done
  •  Fluency in Spanish, Tagalog, or Chinese
