Position Description: 

**Significant opportunities for advancement and exposure in the broader legal services community, as well as opportunity to be considered for ED position within 3 years.**

The Access Project uses innovative program design and cloud technology to create effective pro bono opportunities for the private bar so that pro bono attorneys can materially contribute to closing the justice gap. The Managing Attorney for Clean Slate Programs will oversee our burgeoning California clean slate services program.

The Managing Attorney will assume responsibility for our established Rising Scholars Clean Slate program, which delivers post-conviction relief to thousands community college students throughout the state, using our proprietary RAP analysis tool and volunteer services platform.

The Managing Attorney will collaborate with the Executive Director on developing new avenues for applying our program to scale services and will be The Access Project’s representative in coalition-wide efforts to improve post-conviction remedies and access to justice.

The Ideal Candidate
• is passionate about improving access to justice
• is eager to advance in the legal services field and is looking for opportunities for lead
• has writing and speaking skills and can adapt communications style for economically, socially, and experientially diverse audiences. You need to be equally adept at chatting with a senior partner at a top-10 law firm, gathering information from a clerk at a county courthouse, arguing before a superior court judge, and empathizing with a person on parole who has been incarcerated for most of their lives.
• is interested in data-grounded policy advocacy
• is knowledgeable (or eager to learn) about using technology to scale access to justice
• is knowledgeable (or eager to learn) about human-centered program design

Responsibilities

Manage Rising Scholars Clean Slate Program
You will be the primary point of contact for our partnership with the California Community College. You will be visiting the schools to educate students on their rights, overseeing pro bono volunteer work, and supervising our student communications coordinator and file clerk.

In general, our clients represent themselves in court, but if you desire court experience there are many opportunities for court appearances.

Maintain volunteer portal
The key to delivering effective legal services at scale is to balance automation with individualized services. With the Executive Director you will work to improve our volunteer portal, training materials, and RAP analysis tool.

Represent The Access Project in the legal services community
You will be attending re-entry coalition meetings, tracking and commenting on legislation, attending and/or speaking at legal services and tech conferences as requested by the Executive Director

Requirements: 

California Bar membership
Ability to commute to Richmond, CA, office at least 3 days per week
Ability to travel around the state for community college meetings
Ability to climb one flight of stairs to second floor office. Accommodations will be made as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
