CALS is a nonprofit organization, which provides free legal assistance to low-income and elderly individuals in 44 Arkansas counties with offices in Benton, Little Rock, El Dorado, Fort Smith, Hot Springs, Pine Bluff, Rogers, and Russellville. CALS is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

The Center for Arkansas Legal Services (CALS) is seeking a full-time Staff Attorney for its 44-county service area. Applicants must be licensed to practice law in Arkansas or able to obtain the ability to practice law in Arkansas within a few months of hire and must have a desire to work with low-income clients. The Staff Attorney will handle cases resulting from the Rural Communities Opioid Response Program (CALS RCORP) grant. This position will sit in one of these four offices: Pine Bluff, Ft. Smith, El Dorado or Hot Springs Arkansas.

General Responsibilities:

Commitment to providing high quality, aggressive advocacy.
Provide legal services to substance use disorder/opioid use disorder (SUD/OUD) clients.
Participation in community outreach and clinics.
Other duties as assigned.

Skills Required:

Conducts litigation in court and at administrative hearings, prepares legal documents, conducts legal research and investigation, advises clients, and other direct representation duties.
Excellent legal writing skills.
Arkansas State bar admission or eligible for admission on motion. Minimum 3 years’ experience preferred.
Ability to maintain good relationships with clients, co-workers, and the community.
Knowledge of basic computer operations and standard legal office computer practices.
Strong planning, problem solving and organization skills.
Effective oral and written communicative abilities.
A valid Arkansas driver’s license and ability to travel throughout Arkansas to represent clients.

Skills Preferred:

Background experience in SUD/OUD response.
Ability to speak Spanish.
Experience responding to issues of poverty.
Demonstrated leadership potential.

Salary based on the years of experience practicing law.

Requirements: 

Licensed to practice law.
