Georgia Innocence Project (GIP) is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to correcting and preventing wrongful convictions in Georgia, primarily by providing pro bono legal services to people convicted of serious crimes that they did not commit. The Paralegal-Investigator position is based in our office in Atlanta and requires coordinating and undertaking occasional case-related travel throughout Georgia. In addition to tracking casework activities in GIP’s case management system and ensuring quality control in recordkeeping and across platforms, the Paralegal-Investigator is responsible for the following duties:
LEGAL SUPPORT (50%)
- Digest and summarize documents as needed
- Help coordinate file sharing with co-counsel, experts, and others
- Help oversee / conduct late-stage case closure and document return process
- Assist in preparing documents for court hearings and filings
- Assist in obtaining transcripts and various records through the courts, through Open Records Act requests, trial attorneys, and other appropriate requests
- Manage GIP’s Open Records Act Tracker
- Schedule client calls and attorney prison visits
- Assist with office administration responsibilities as requested
INVESTIGATION (50%)
- Subpoena and coordinate witnesses for hearings
- Attend court hearings, assist, and possibly testify as needed
- Schedule appointments and assist in searching for physical evidence
- Conduct supervised investigations, including potential interviews of applicants and/or witnesses, to help determine whether cases should advance
- Conduct factual and legal research as directed
- Bachelor’s degree and 2+ years legal / investigations or equivalent experience strongly preferred
- Formal paralegal training or an investigator license is not required
- Passion for and understanding of GIP’s mission and work
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Strong verbal communication skills
- Self-starter that also asks questions and seeks clarification whenever needed
- Follows all projects through to completion
