Gulfcoast Legal Services (GLS) is seeking a chief executive officer to lead this nonprofit organization with the mission to provide high-quality free civil legal advice, representation, and education to vulnerable residents of Pinellas, Manatee, and Sarasota Counties in order to improve the lifestyle and living conditions of the low-income community and encourage self-sufficiency. GLS offices are located in St. Petersburg (headquarters), Bradenton, Wimauma, and Venice, Florida. GLS is funded by federal, state, and county grants, as well as generous donations from charitable foundations, organizations, and private individuals. GLS is not funded by the Legal Services Corporation.

About Gulfcoast Legal Services

GLS is a regional 501(c)3 non-profit organization with an annual budget of approximately $4.1 million. The organization meets a critical need in the Florida Suncoast region by providing free, comprehensive civil legal aid to underserved and vulnerable clients. Founded in 1978, GLS has been providing services for 44 years and presently provides services to nearly 4,000 clients each year. GLS has a 12-member board of directors and an experienced staff of 44, all of whom are committed to the organization’s mission, dedicated to helping others, and passionate about the work they do.

GLS provides civil legal services to financially eligible, vulnerable clients in Pinellas, Manatee, and Sarasota Counties in the following substantive areas:

• Consumer and Financial Stability
• Housing, including Fair Housing
• Immigration
• Low Income Tax Clinic
• Human Trafficking
• Family Law
• Victims of Crime (VOCA)

Salary is commensurate with experience based on a competitive salary scale. Benefits include health, dental, vision, life, short and long term disability, retirement, and generous paid time off.

About the Position

Priority roles and responsibilities for the next chief executive officer will include, but are not limited to:
• Serving as the public face of GLS, and strengthening its collaborations with local and state legal advocacy, community, and governmental organizations
• Providing policy and advocacy leadership to GLS staff
• Oversee work performed by GLS’s 22 staff attorneys as they serve the organization’s clients
• Leading efforts to develop new and expanded financial support for the program’s mission
• Managing GLS with transparency, open communication, and teamwork
• Supporting GLS staff members in delivering high quality, client-centered legal services for clients through professional development opportunities and up-to-date technology
• Leading strategic planning and priority-setting initiatives
• Maintain and foster high standards of ethical legal practice and success both in and out of the courtroom
• Assessing the impact of COVID-19 and developing plans to meet client needs and staff needs
• Enhancing GLS’s capacity to address current and emerging client needs
• Cultivating a productive and effective working relationship with staff and the board of directors
• Leading a program and staff that are recognized for providing effective client-centered advocacy utilizing both service and impact strategies

Desired qualifications of the next chief executive officer include, but are not limited to:
• Demonstrated passion for the mission of GLS and offering a vision for GLS’s future
• Attorney in good standing, licensed in Florida or willing to become licensed in Florida preferred
• Successful leadership in a multi-million dollar organization, preferably a legal aid organization
• At least seven years of management experience involving staff supervision, financial oversight and reporting, budget development, and compliance with grant and contract requirements required
• Demonstrated success in resource development, including private fundraising and/or grant writing
• Demonstrated experience working successfully with organizations and individuals with diverse perspectives
• Personal qualities will include professionalism, open-mindedness, and flexibility; the ability to make tough decisions; a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; and a non-hierarchical management style
