Position Description:

Community Legal Aid (CLA) is the non-profit legal services program providing free civil legal assistance to low-income and elderly residents of central and western Massachusetts. CLA has over 140 dedicated, talented staff working across multiple offices. Our core work includes effective client-centered advocacy and robust outreach to and partnerships with our client communities.

CLA seeks a Senior Supervising Attorney (SSA) to join its management team and oversee the work of its housing practitioners in western Mass. The SSA will work out of CLA's Springfield office and will supervise the legal work of housing advocates focused on eviction defense and access to affordable housing programs. This supervision will include co-counseling cases, editing pleadings and briefs, preparing attorneys for and observing them in court, and engaging in regular case reviews. The SSA will also assist with coordinating the training of staff and be responsible for relationship-building with local partners, including the Housing Court. In addition, the attorney will work with CLA's Managing Attorneys in conducting annual performance reviews of staff, and will assist in writing grant applications and reports.

CLA is looking for a candidate who can work collaboratively as part of a three-person team of housing SSAs in managing CLA's organization-wide housing practice. The candidate should be someone who is committed to developing and coordinating systems to ensure that CLA's western Mass. housing team is properly supervised and supported. The candidate should be an independent thinker and have the ability to calmly and thoughtfully work with a housing team that works in a high-stakes, fast-paced environment which can often be stressful for advocates. The candidate should have substantial housing experience, but also be someone who is comfortable acknowledging the limits of their knowledge and seeking support and advice from others as needed, as CLA has many attorneys and paralegals on staff with decades of experience in housing law.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: Admission to Mass. Bar or entitlement to practice under a Mass. practice rule required. Must have at least five years experience as a housing attorney, with significant experience in eviction defense and subsidy programs. Experience with low-income populations; ability to work collaboratively; and strong supervision and communication skills required. Salary DOE. Liberal fringe benefits package. Candidate must be in compliance with CLA's non-bargaining unit vaccination policy prior to the start of employment.
