Position Description:

New Mexico Legal Aid seeks a paralegal for its Statewide Housing Stability program to assist with serving eligible clients threatened with loss of their housing. Responsibilities will be statewide. Due to the range of service area, this position may be housed in any of NMLA's statewide office locations, but there is preference for the Albuquerque office in order to work closely with the Statewide Housing Stability Manager. NMLA's Housing Stability program focuses on representation of clients threatened with loss of housing or housing subsidies, as well as statewide clinics and outreach activities.

Under the supervision of the managing attorney for the Housing Stability project at NMLA, the paralegal will be responsible for litigation support and assistance to housing attorneys in issues such as eviction prevention, habitability, reasonable accommodations, subsidized housing, and other housing related work, and will also assist in designing statewide clinics and outreach programs. The paralegal will process intakes, draft pleadings, contact clients, and generally support attorneys in preparation for court. They will also send referrals to other support service agencies, engage in outreach, and arrange/assist with legal clinics. We seek highly motivated candidates who are passionate about justice and strongly committed to helping NMLA better serve our client communities. Candidates should have, or quickly be able to develop, expertise in housing and statewide resources available to low-income persons.

Requirements: At least three years' experience as a Paralegal is preferred but will consider exceptionally well qualified entry level candidates. Must be able to effectively use computer technology and remote communications systems, including shared on-line workspaces and web meeting and videoconferencing software, and to effectively collaborate with staff located in multiple offices. Candidates also must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks, and build collaborative relationships within the staff and the community served by NMLA. This is a statewide position and the candidate must be able to regularly travel. Proficiency in Spanish is a plus.

Applicants will be subject to a background search. Please do not let this deter you from applying. NMLA is committed to a strong workforce and will review records individually to determine whether a particular record will disqualify.
