Position Description: 

New York County Defender Services is seeking an Impact Litigation Attorney for its Policy and Special Litigation Unit.

Essential duties include:

- Supporting all aspects of NYCDS’s policy reform work.
- Continually and extensively analyzing New York’s criminal justice landscape and assessing what role, if any, impact litigation could play in effecting reform.
- Initiating and overseeing all aspects of NYCDS’s impact litigation caseload.
- Functioning as one of the office’s primary liaisons to other institutional defenders, community organizations, private law firms, lawmakers, and other stakeholders regarding litigation and advocacy designed to reform aspects of the criminal punishment system that affect our clients and their communities.


Training and qualifications include:

- New York State Bar Admission.
- Demonstrated commitment to public defense, social and racial justice, and equity.
- Exceptional legal writing and editing skills including, preferably, a publishing history.
- Experience in New York State and Federal impact litigation on issues related to criminal justice.
- Extensive knowledge of relevant New York State and Federal civil practice including the ability to commence and direct civil litigation.
