Position Description: 

BayLegal seeks an attorney with a strong commitment to public interest and social justice to join our IPV/Family Law practice group in San Francisco. The attorney will be working on a project in collaboration with other community agencies to assist IPV survivors involved with Family and Children’s Services. This position is based in our San Francisco office and involves traveling throughout the county and potentially the Bay Area, as necessary, to best serve our low-income clients. As a BayLegal staff attorney working on this project, you will have the opportunity to:
• Learn and assist with the diverse legal needs of IPV survivors and their families involved with Family and Children’s Services (FCS), who often come from underserved and marginalized communities in San Francisco, for the purpose of increasing family safety and improving family functioning.
• Represent clients in an array of Unified Family Court proceedings including, but not exclusively, restraining order, dissolution, child custody, child and spousal support, and paternity actions.
• Represent immigrant survivors and their children in seeking and obtaining immigration relief through U Visa, VAWA, Adjustment of Status petitions, and employment authorization.
• Serve as an IPV legal expert and provide technical assistance to court appointed dependency attorneys.
• Engage in comprehensive assessment of clients’ legal needs and work with other BayLegal attorneys to address issues of youth justice, public benefits, health access, consumer rights and housing stabilization.
• Supervise and mentor law clerks, volunteers, and interns, and identify systemic issues and ways to improve access.
• While maintaining attorney-client privilege and client confidentiality, collaborate to achieve positive family outcomes for survivors involved or referred to FCS.
• Participate in cross-referrals to assure clients receive necessary legal and supportive services.
• Provide legal technical assistance and participate in trainings on issues specific to survivors navigating legal systems.
• Co-counsel on cases and matters with, and act as a resource and provide training for, less experienced attorneys and advocates.
• Provide workshops and technical assistance to other community agencies and client communities on family law, interpersonal violence, and juvenile dependency issues, as well as the broad range of related civil legal issues.
• Develop relationships and engage in collaboration with a range of public and private community partners, including governmental agencies, courts, and community-based organizations, to ensure integrative services and address systemic barriers facing this client community.
• Work closely with BayLegal’s development, grants and contracts, and communications team to promote BayLegal’s mission and resource development and support all grant reporting requirements.
• Engage in other tasks and projects that further the interest of BayLegal’s mission and operations as a non-profit.

Temporary COVID-19 remote work: Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, all BayLegal employees are primarily working remotely. While BayLegal has implemented detailed health and safety protocols to minimize risk of exposure and has an evolving plan for reopening our local offices, we anticipate remaining primarily remote throughout much of 2021. All employees are expected to be available to travel to BayLegal offices and services locations as needed and in compliance with public health advisories. Employees are expected to reside in California and must be able to commute to the physical BayLegal base location or service delivery location within the San Francisco Bay Area.

While BayLegal remains primarily remote, all employees are issued BayLegal computers and provided appropriate supplies. BayLegal has implemented and continues to explore additional technologies to make working remotely as efficient and connected as possible. All employees receive a flat-rate monthly amount to reimburse for work-related use of personal IT equipment, including internet, and home. BayLegal is opened to providing flexibility regarding work schedules and part-time or full-time employment to the extent feasible for the position.

Requirements: 

• Humility in working with colleagues and clients across the spectrum of diversity, including race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, immigrant status, religious identity, physical and mental disabilities, and/or limited English proficiency.
• Experience and/or interest in working with survivors of trauma.
• Professional or personal knowledge of the juvenile dependency system.
• Membership in good standing in the CA Bar.
• Two or more years of relevant family law experience preferred.
• Bilingual ability in Spanish strongly preferred.
• Strong personal work ethic and ability to organize time, manage diverse activities, and meet critical deadlines with minimal supervision.
• Excellent writing, editing, and proof-reading skills, with ability to be detail oriented.
• Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work collaboratively with a dynamic team.
• Curious and self-directed with an ability to anticipate what needs to be done.
• Ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects while maintaining a firm grasp of individual project details.
