FULL-TIME STAFF ATTORNEY
SERVING SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE/SEXUAL ASSAULT

Legal Assistance of Western New York, Inc.® (LawNY®) Bath Office has an opening for a Staff Attorney to provide legal advice and representation to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault on civil legal issues, including orders of protection, custody, and support, as well as Title IX enforcement in campus sexual assault cases. The staff attorney will also provide advice and representation on other civil legal issues, such as employment and public benefits, that arise as a result of the abuse. The position requires frequent appearances in Family Court. The staff attorney will work as part of a team of attorneys and paralegals providing trauma-informed advocacy for survivors. The position involves close coordination with the local domestic violence and sexual assault services agencies, as well as participation as a member of the multi-disciplinary domestic abuse response team.

Program: LawNY® is a not-for-profit organization which provides civil legal services to low-income clients in a 14-county region in western New York State. The Bath office is located in the southern Finger Lakes region, and serves Steuben and Allegany Counties. The office provides legal advice and representation in the areas of housing, public benefits, family law, employment and consumer law. Program attorneys and paralegals work across areas of specialization to bring a holistic approach to addressing issues affecting our clients and communities.

Qualifications:
• Relevant legal experience and a demonstrated commitment to working with survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, as well as low-income individuals and families
• Understanding of trauma and commitment to continuous learning about trauma-informed advocacy
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Commitment to timely meeting deadlines and strong attention to detail
• Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and community agencies
• Ability to assist with grant reporting as needed.

Salary: Salary is dependent on years of relevant experience and based on a pay scale with annual increments. The entry level annual salary for a newly admitted attorney with no practice experience is $50,000 and increases to $57,500 for an attorney with five years of experience. Requirements: 

Applicants must be admitted to the New York State Bar, eligible for admission, or qualify for a practice order. Law school graduates who have taken the first available New York State bar examination following completion of law school may qualify for a practice order pending admission to the New York State bar pursuant to the LawNY® practice order. Attorneys admitted in another jurisdiction may qualify for a practice order for up to 18 months pursuant to a court rule.
