Virginia Legal Aid Society (VLAS) is a nonprofit law firm that uses law to help thousands of low-income families in south-central Virginia every year in problems involving housing, access to health care, family stability, education, and consumer lending. Founded in 1977, VLAS does this through offices in Lynchburg, Martinsville, Danville, Farmville, and Suffolk, three practice groups, an intake/advice unit, a healthcare enrollment services unit, and a rent relief application unit; all operate together as one firm.

Virginia Legal Aid Society seeks an energetic, creative and dedicated Managing Attorney to better the lives of low-income and vulnerable individuals and families in Suffolk and nearby counties and cities through direct legal representation and systemic advocacy. The Managing Attorney will supervise and support three attorneys, a paralegal, two rent relief navigators, and a chief secretary working in our regional office in downtown Suffolk and remotely.

Suffolk, on the southwestern side of vibrant Hampton Roads, combines small-town charm, water and land sports, ecosystems including rivers, marshes, and the Great Dismal Swamp, performing and visual arts, history, festivals, boutiques, chef-owned restaurants, and nearby attractions in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Hampton.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Managing Attorney plans, organizes and carries out the delivery of legal services to clients of VLAS and has responsibility for the administration of the regional office including:

• Individual client representation before all appropriate forums.
• The supervision of regional office staff.
• Community relations including a pro bono program
• General office management and other related duties and assignments as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
• Juris Doctorate
• At least 5 years of legal practice; supervision and legal aid experience are strongly preferred

COMPENSATION:
• Job Type: Full-time Salaried FLSA Exempt
• Hiring Salary Range: $68,000 or above depending on experience
