Position Description: 

Community Legal Aid (CLA) is the non-profit legal services program providing free civil legal assistance to low-income residents of central and western Massachusetts. CLA has over 100 dedicated, talented staff working across multiple offices, and a budget of over $12 million. Our core work includes effective client-centered advocacy and robust outreach to and partnerships with our client communities.

CLA seeks attorneys to assist tenants at risk of eviction and homelessness due to the impact of COVID-19. These positions are temporary and funded through December 31, 2021. Under the COVID Eviction Legal Help Project, teams of attorneys, intake paralegals, case managers, and support staff will help tenants facing eviction due to the impact of COVID-19. The CLA attorney team members will provide legal information, assistance, and representation of tenants facing eviction due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The attorneys may participate in CLA's Housing Court lawyer-for-the-day programs, which may be virtual or in-person. The attorneys will have significant client contact and will work closely with community partners. The attorneys will work out of one of CLA's five main offices in central and western Massachusetts (Springfield, Northampton, Pittsfield, Fitchburg, and Worcester).

QUALIFICATIONS: Admission to Massachusetts Bar, entitled to practice under a Massachusetts practice rule, or scheduled to take the next Mass. bar exam. Experience in landlord-tenant law preferred, as is fluency in Spanish. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to be part of an interactive, supportive team with high expectations. A demonstrated sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse backgrounds, and commitment to working with low-income communities.
