Position Description: 

Central West Justice Center (CWJC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Community Legal Aid (CLA), seeks a staff attorney to work in its Benefit Unit. Together, CWJC and CLA have over 140 dedicated, talented staff working across multiple offices in entral and Western Massachusetts, a budget of $16 million. Our core work includes effective client-centered advocacy and robust outreach to and partnerships with our client communities.
The attorney will assist clients with cases involving public benefits issues, including TAFDC, EAEDC, SNAP (food stamps), MassHealth, unemployment compensation, and Emergency Assistance shelter. The advocate will be based in CWJC's Springfield office and will assist clients living in various parts of western Mass. In addition to handling cases, the advocate will engage in community outreach and education. Some grant reporting may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS: Admission to Massachusetts Bar, or eligible to sit for next Massachusetts Bar examination, or entitled to practice under a Massachusetts practice law. Fluency in a second language, especially Spanish, preferred. Experience advocating for low-income clients seeking public benefits and/or administrative agency advocacy experience, including law school clinical experience, preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills. A demonstrated dedication to social justice, sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse backgrounds, and commitment to working with low-income communities.
