Position Description:

Community Legal Aid (CLA) is the non-profit legal services program providing free civil legal assistance to low-income residents of central and western Massachusetts. CLA has over 100 dedicated, talented staff working across multiple offices, and a budget of over $12 million. Our core work includes effective client-centered advocacy and robust outreach to and partnerships with our client communities.

CLA seeks a full-time housing attorney to work in its Springfield office for the period of one year. The attorney will assist clients with cases involving eviction defense, access to rent subsidy programs, and other housing-related matters. It is anticipated that the attorney will engage in a high-volume eviction defense practice as the state's eviction moratorium ends in autumn 2020. The attorney will participate in CLA's Housing Court lawyer-for-the-day program, which may be virtual or in person. The attorney will have significant client contact, will engage in community outreach and education, and will work closely with community partners. Some grant-writing and grant-reporting may be required from time to time.

Please submit cover letter and resume to: [email protected], or mail to Judy Zeh, Human Resource Manager, Community Legal Aid, 405 Main Street, Worcester, MA 01608. CLA is an Equal Opportunity Employer and strives to ensure that our staff members reflect the diversity of the communities we serve. CLA encourages applicants from a broad range of backgrounds and experiences.

Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS: Admission to the Massachusetts Bar, or eligible to sit for next Massachusetts Bar examination, or entitled to practice under a Massachusetts rule. Experience in landlord-tenant law strongly preferred, as is fluency in Spanish. Excellent oral and written communication skills. A demonstrated dedication to social justice, sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse backgrounds, and commitment to working with low income communities.
