Position Description: 

For 50 years LAF has provided people living in poverty in metropolitan Chicago with comprehensive free legal services to resolve non-criminal issues. Each year LAF’s more than 80 full-time attorneys and staff help resolve civil legal problems, including domestic violence, consumer fraud, and unfair evictions. Their work impacts about 40,000 people each year.
UPosition:U LAF’s Veterans’ Rights Project is seeking four AmeriCorps J.D. interns for the spring or summer of 2017. The Veterans’ Rights Project consists of four attorneys who provide holistic legal services to low-income veterans. The project operates a monthly clinic to provide community outreach for veterans. Interns will conduct intake interviews, help veterans apply for benefits and appeal denials, advise veterans in other areas of civil legal aid, research legal issues, and assist at the clinic and other outreach events.

Requirements: 

Qualifications: To participate in AmeriCorps JD:
• You must be a current law student at an Equal Justice Works member school
• You must not receive compensation for more than $4,300 in external funding for the same service
• You must not receive school credit for the same service
• You must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or lawful permanent resident (e.g. green card) and pass a criminal background check, including an FBI fingerprint check (though applicants are not disqualified for most criminal records).

Compensation: Interns who complete the program will be eligible for an Education Award. Applicants are encouraged to seek outside funding as well. LAF will work with students and their schools to secure funding from outsides sources where available.
