Position Description:

Pine Tree Legal Assistance has an immediate opening for an entry-level litigation attorney position in its Veterans Unit and based in its Augusta field office, working as part of a team involved in a new medical/legal collaboration based at Togus Veterans Administration Medical Clinic (VAMC), which is the only such facility serving Maine veterans. The project follows the medical-legal partnership framework and model developed by the National Center for Medical-Legal Partnerships (NCMLP) at the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health (, and builds on the growing network of medical/legal collaborations within VA medical facilities around the United States.

Current experience suggests that the attorney will appear in court or before administrative agencies (including the VA) on a regular basis to provide representation in consumer, landlord/tenant and benefits cases (including both health and income benefits, although the attorney may also handle litigation in other areas of law from time to time. Many cases present more complex issues that may require significant time, others may be resolved in summary proceedings and can be completed with 5 – 10 hours of legal time. The attorney is also expected to provide supervision support for the work of the local office paralegal, both in the provision of limited legal assistance and in other work specific to the attorney’s caseload. As a result, attorneys should bill a minimum of 75% of total work time to individual cases.

The attorney will also support the Veterans medical-legal partnership project through community engagement with VA clinical and administrative staff, and work with other members of the Veterans Unit on related projects, including materials to enhance veteran advocacy locally and nationally through, the provision of outreach and/or trainings and work on collaborations or other initiatives designed to address specific legal needs of low-income veterans. Specific decisions about how to prioritize between these time commitments are made in consultation with other colleagues in the Veterans Unit and the attorney supervisor.

The current position has been funded for two years by a private foundation. A detailed job description with general and specific work expectations is available upon request from the Executive Director. All applicants should possess the following skills:

• Demonstrated litigation experience, including the capacity to handle a high volume caseload; previous experience within a veterans clinic would also be very helpful;
• Previous experience or interest in working within the unique dynamics of a medical-legal collaborative;
• The ability to work collaboratively and establish positive working relationships with community partners and agencies, hospitals, and health clinics and providers, and state and federal veteran agencies; and
• The ability to work well with individuals from different cultural backgrounds and communities, and with military service members and veterans

Because of funding constraints, attorneys with fewer than three years of experience are preferred. In general, applicants should be a current members of the Maine bar or licensed in another jurisdiction and eligible to practice under Rule 89(c) of the Maine Rules of Civil Procedure. Pine Tree will consider law graduates sitting for the Maine bar exam in July with the relevant skills; however, hiring is conditional on successful Maine bar admission
