Position Description: 

For more than 50 years LAF has provided people living in poverty in metropolitan Chicago with comprehensive free legal services to resolve non-criminal issues. Each year LAF’s more than 80 full-time attorneys and staff help resolve civil legal problems, including public benefits issues, domestic violence, consumer fraud, and unfair evictions. Their work impacts over 40,000 people each year.
Position: LAF is seeking a Supervisory Attorney in our IWR Practice Group, located in downtown Chicago, to oversee our Employment and Farmworker projects.

Responsibilities: This position will involve supervising the legal work of staff attorneys, law students, volunteers, and others, primarily in the fields of employment and unemployment law, migrant farmworker legal issues, wage theft, discrimination, labor based U-visas, and labor trafficking. The supervisor will co-counsel cases as part of staff development and will be responsible for training staff and overseeing their professional development. The supervisor will also maintain a caseload of individual cases and engage in advocacy designed to have a lasting, measureable effect on our client community. The supervisor will also engage in a significant amount of community outreach, which includes travel across Illinois up to 50% of the time, while overseeing several satellite offices.

Requirements: 

Qualifications: Applicants must be licensed to practice law in the state of Illinois, and have at least four years of legal services or general civil practice experience. Experience in employment law, farmworker legal issues, and immigration law is highly desired. Applicants must have demonstrated experience working with low-income clients and must have excellent communication skills. IWR works as a team and often under very intense deadlines and thus the ideal candidate will have demonstrated skills to work in this type of environment. Fluency in Spanish is highly desired.
