Position Description: 

For more than 50 years LAF has provided people living in poverty in metropolitan
Chicago with comprehensive, free legal services to resolve non-criminal issues.
Each year LAF’s more than 80 full-time attorneys and staff help resolve civil legal problems, including domestic violence, consumer fraud, unfair evictions and improper benefit denials and terminations. Our work impacts more than
40,000 people each year.

Position:

LAF seeks a full-time staff attorney in our Public Benefits Practice Group.

Responsibilities:

• Representing clients in administrative hearings;
• Pursuing appeals of administrative decisions in state and federal court;
• Assisting the practice group in identifying impact issues in public benefits programs, including SNAP, TANF, SSI, and Medicaid, among others;
• Co-counseling affirmative litigation in public benefits cases;
• Undertaking non-litigation advocacy to strengthen benefits programs;
• Conducting community education and outreach;
• Working collaboratively within LAF to provide comprehensive legal services to clients; and
• Building relationships with community partners in poverty fighting efforts

Requirements: 

Qualifications:

Applicants must be licensed to practice law in the State of Illinois. One to two years’ experience with public benefits programs strongly preferred. Applicants must have excellent communication skills and the ability to work well under pressure. Bi-lingual speakers preferred
