NLSLA is seeking a Staff Attorney for Health Consumer Center (HCC) for its Pacoima office. The Attorney will work with the HCC team to identify trends on a range of health care issues affecting low-income individuals including eligibility, access to care, and affordability and bring litigation to address those trends. This position requires demonstrated complex litigation and public policy experience and experience working effectively with pro bono lawyers, law students, social service agencies, and community organizations.
Duties include: identify systemic or policy issues impacting large numbers of low-income health care consumers and bring litigation to address those trends. The staff attorney will also coordinate with pro bono lawyers, law students, advocates in partner organizations with consumer assistance projects statewide, and all other duties assigned.
California Bar membership is required. Highly motivated attorney passionate about public service work, with sensitivity to those in crisis. 5 years plus litigation experience preferred. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to manage a substantial caseload. Excellent writing, speaking and organizational skills and the ability to communicate effectively with clients, community organizations, government agencies, attorneys, the judiciary and the public as well as capacity to supervise students and law fellows. Experience advocating for individuals or other advocacy work involving health and benefits issues preferred; Health expertise preferred. General poverty law background in the areas of housing, consumer, immigration, family law, public benefits and the delivery of health care desirable. Bilingual capacity in one of our client languages is strongly preferred.
