Position Description: 

For the past 50 years, LAF has provided people living in poverty in metropolitan Chicago with comprehensive free legal services to resolve non-criminal issues. Each year, LAF’s 80 attorneys and other staff help resolve civil legal problem including consumer fraud, foreclosure, unfair evictions, domestic violence, and many others. LAF’s work impacts over 30,000 people annually.
Position: LAF is adding two full-time staff attorneys to its Consumer Practice Group (CPG) under a foreclosure prevention grant provided by the Lawyers Trust Fund of Illinois. The attorneys will specialize in the representation of homeowners facing the loss of their homes, typically defendants in mortgage foreclosure cases or debtors in chapter 13 proceedings. The attorneys will also handle other consumer cases such as chapter 7, predatory lending, debt collection, insurance, and public utility cases

Requirements: 

Responsibilities: The attorney will: (1) litigate on behalf of homeowners – primarily in foreclosure and bankruptcy court, but also via affirmative litigation filed in state and federal court; (2) work with CPG paralegals to help homeowners obtain loss mitigation; (3) represent consumers in other state and federal cases (including bankruptcy) to enforce or defend their rights; (4) conduct community legal education and outreach on homeownership and other consumer issues; (5) engage in allowable policy-related advocacy related to consumer issues; and (6) participate in public relations and/or fund-raising efforts as needed.
Qualifications: Must be admitted to the Illinois State Bar. Must be admitted to the Northern District of Illinois Bar or be able to gain admittance thereto. Must have consumer law experience. Must be able to demonstrate a commitment to public interest law and/or a familiarity with LAF’s client population, and must be able to communicate effectively with people from diverse segments of society. Spanish-speaking ability is a plus. Bankruptcy experience is a plus.
Salary: Will be set depending on qualifications and experience level. LAF offers generous fringe benefits.
