Position Description: 

For 50 years, LAF (formerly Legal Assistance Foundation) has provided free civil legal assistance to people living in poverty in metropolitan Chicago. Each year LAF’s attorneys, volunteers, and staff help resolve legal problems, including domestic violence, consumer fraud, unfair evictions, and juvenile expungements. Our work impacts more than 40,000 people each year.

Position: LAF anticipates receiving funding from the Lawyer’s Trust Fund to initiate a Ready to Work project that will help clients overcome barriers to employment. The Immigrants and Workers’ Rights Practice Group (“IWR”) at LAF is seeking a highly skilled paralegal to assist in providing direct legal services in employment, immigration, human trafficking, and some migrant farmworker matters. Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Providing comprehensive legal services to clients with employment law related matters, including unemployment, wage theft, discrimination, labor based U-visas, and labor trafficking;
• Working on-site at partner agencies where we do outreach and conduct intake;
• Litigation assistance in cases across IWR;
• Assisting clients with applications for benefits;
• Making appropriate referrals to outside agencies;
• Attending trainings and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of current legal issues surrounding employment law;
• Assisting with grant reporting requirements;
• Conducting community outreach throughout Illinois; and
• Other duties as determined by the Supervising Attorney and Director.

Requirements: 

The paralegal will work with the staff of LAF’s IWR Group, which provides high- quality free civil legal services to qualifying immigrants and low-wage workers. IWR consists of three projects -- immigration, farmworker, and employment -- which work closely together.

Qualifications: Applicants must be fluent in Spanish; be committed long-term to public interest legal services; have strong oral and writing skills; be highly organized; have a driver’s license and good driving record; and have team-centered work experience.
