Position Description: 

The Legal Aid Society of Greater Cincinnati seeks an Intern for its Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP). The VLP recruits, trains, and matches Volunteer Lawyers with Legal Aid clients.

The term of this position could be either through May 2017 or August 2017, with the possibility of a one-year extension. The ideal candidate will be a recent college graduate who is interested in exploring legal and related social service fields before embarking on a career or further education. The Intern has the opportunity to work closely with Legal Aid's public interest staff, and private attorneys who provide pro bono services to low-income clients.

The Intern will be assigned a variety of duties, including (but not limited to):

  •  initial interviews with clients
  •  matching clients with Volunteer Attorneys
  •  writing case summaries
  •  assisting the VLP Managing Attorney on the Wills Clinic project, including locating and scheduling sites, communicating with site managers, creating and disseminating Clinic  flyers, maintaining client files, communicating with clients/students/pro bono attorneys, attending Clinics to provide assistance
  •  assisting with other projects as assigned by the VLP Managing Attorney and/or the Pro Bono Coordinator
  •  opening and distributing the daily mail
  •  accurately entering information into case management system and other recordkeeping systems
  •  providing administrative and case management support to Legal Aid (20%)

This is a full-time, 37.5 hours/week, position, paying $10.10 per hour. The position is eligible for participation in Legal Aid's medical, dental, and vision insurance plans, medical flexible spending plan, and transportation assistance plan.

Requirements: 

Candidates must meet the following qualifications:

  •  Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university
  •  Able to work a regular Monday-Friday schedule, with occasional Saturdays
  •  Have reliable transportation
  •  Demonstrate ability to work independently, as well as part of a team
  •  Competency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook

As noted above, the ideal candidate will be a recent college graduate interested in exploring legal and related social service fields before embarking on a career or further education.
