Community Legal Aid (CLA), a non-profit legal services program providing free civil legal assistance to eligible low-income and elderly clients in Central and Western Massachusetts, seeks two attorneys to assist residents of western Massachusetts with civil legal issues related to their HIV/AIDS status. Each position is temporary for a period of one year, but is subject to extension if funding is secured. The areas of practice for this project include eviction defense; access to affordable housing, healthcare and benefits programs; family law matters; and estate planning issues. The attorneys will be based in CLA’s Springfield or Northampton office and will travel throughout western Mass. to meet with clients and attend hearings and meetings. In addition to handling cases for clients, the attorneys will conduct community outreach and education and will support a panel of private volunteer lawyers assisting the project’s clients. The attorneys will also assist in the preparation of periodic grant reports.


QUALIFICATIONS: Admission to Mass. Bar or entitlement to practice under a Mass. practice rule is required. Experience in one or more areas of civil poverty law and experience working with vulnerable populations strongly preferred. Spanish proficiency preferred. Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work in a collaborative setting are important. Ideal candidate would have experience working with the project’s target population.
