Position Description: 

Virginia Poverty Law Center (VPLC) engages in wide-ranging advocacy to seek access to civil justice for lower-income Virginians through education, empowerment, impact litigation, and advocacy with legislative and administrative agencies. We seek an Immigration Attorney to join our newest initiative, the Virginia Immigrant Victims of Domestic and/or Sexual Violence Legal Services Project. The attorney selected for this position will plan, develop and litigate cases in federal and state court designed to improve the lives and working conditions of immigrant victims of domestic and/or sexual violence across Virginia. This position will be supervised by the Director of VPLC’s Center for Family Advocacy, but will be expected to exercise a high level of independence in handling individual cases. The Immigration Attorney is funded primarily by a grant from the federal Office for Victims of Crime (VOCA) and Virginia’s Department of Criminal Justice Services, to provide legal services and community legal education to immigrant victims of crime who are victims of domestic and/or sexual violence. The Immigration Attorney will be primarily responsible for supervising the work of the Immigration Advocate/Paralegal.


Qualifications include:
• Experience as an attorney litigating on behalf of immigrants;
• Demonstrated commitment to social justice and immigrants’ rights;
• A high level of Spanish language proficiency, sufficient to handle all aspects of cases on behalf of monolingual Spanish-speaking clients without assistance of an interpreter;
• Membership in the Virginia bar, confirmed eligibility to waive in, or a willingness to sit for the next Virginia bar exam;
• Experience working for a public interest law firm, legal services organization or other nonprofit as an attorney or in a pro bono capacity;
• Willingness to engage in frequent and substantial statewide travel in Virginia, including overnight travel; and
• Outstanding communication skills.
