Position Description: 

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Veterans Legal Corps Fellow will be responsible for expanding the work of LAFLA’s Veterans Justice Center by providing direct legal services to Veterans involving such issues as such issues as landlord-tenant and housing stability; performing community outreach and staffing clinics; and identifying and managing cases for pro bono placement. Position pending funding.

COMPENSATION: Up to $38,860:
[$25,060 AmeriCorps living allowance;
$13,800 supplemental benefits for housing and student loan reimbursement.]

OTHER BENEFITS Full medical benefits;
$5,775 AmeriCorps Legal Education Award upon successful completion of service;
Student loan forbearance and interest accrual payment upon successful completion of service; and
Participation in Equal Justice Works training opportunities and conferences, as applicable.

AVAILABILITY: September 1, 2016; VLC Fellow must sign a VLC Fellowship contract and must commit to 1700 hours of service in an 11-12 month term with the possibility of renewal for a second year, provided continued AmeriCorps funding.

• The ability to undergo and pass AmeriCorps-mandated criminal background checks (only conviction for murder and/or presence on sex offender registry are automatic bars to service; other criminal convictions are allowable at LAFLA’s discretion)
• Active membership in the California State Bar or took the CA State Bar in July 2016;
• Demonstrated commitment to serving the needs of low-income people and/or the Veteran community;
• Strong lawyering skills, such as client interviewing and case evaluation, legal research and writing, discovery, negotiations, and trial practice;
• Knowledge of landlord-tenant, subsidized housing, and/or housing law is desirable; and
• Previous experience in a legal services program preferred.
