Position Description: 

Legal Services of Northern Virginia (LSNV) seeks to hire a Deputy Director for Advocacy. LSNV is the nonprofit legal aid organization that provides free civil legal services to low-income, elderly, or disabled clients throughout the region. The Deputy Director for Advocacy will assist the Executive Director in ensuring that LSNV provides an appropriately high quantity of high-quality legal services, and to that end, will:

• In coordination with the Executive Director and the Deputy Director for Program Services, provide day-to-day management, long-term strategic guidance, and priority setting for the program;
• Work to ensure that the program takes a leadership role in providing impact advocacy on major issues and employs an wide range of advocacy tools and innovative programs that are the product of rigorous planning and that are tailored to meet the current and emerging needs of the client community;
• Serve as lead counsel for the program on major cases, and co-counsel and otherwise actively participate in key cases;
• Oversee the substantive law and advocacy training and mentoring of all staff;
• Promote LSNV and its mission by being an active presence in the community, providing community outreach, working with other Legal Aid programs and court systems, as well as the various agencies, committees, and networks that address issues impacting LSNV’s client community;
• Maintain a manageable case load of his or her own; and
• Provide additional assistance requested by the Executive Director.

The Deputy Director for Advocacy will also directly supervise the Chairs of LSNV’s substantive law practice groups.


The successful candidate will be a member in good standing of the Virginia State Bar and will have at least five years of litigation experience. The candidate will also have at least two years of supervisory or managerial experience, ideally in a legal aid or nonprofit setting. Finally, the candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to LSNV’s mission.

Salary range: 
Competitive salary DOE with excellent benefits, including possible loan repayment assistance of up to $5,000 per year.
