Maryland Legal Aid announces the availability of two staff attorney positions, to work at each of the four locations of the Maryland Courts Self-Help Center and District Court Self-Help Centers in Annapolis, Upper Marlboro, Glen Burnie, and Salisbury, Maryland. These positions were specifically designed to help each Self-Help Center maintain capacity. Although based in the Maryland Courts Self-Help Center in Annapolis, the staff attorneys will “float” between offices to fill in for absences created by scheduled attorney leave. When possible, these attorneys will also fill in for staff in the event of unanticipated staff absences.

Description: The attorneys will primarily provide legal assistance to self-represented litigants in connection with civil cases before the Circuit and District Courts of Maryland, including Landlord and Tenant Matters, Family Law Matters (divorce, custody, child support, and guardianship), Civil Claims, Expungement and Shielding of Records, Consumer Matters; Return of Property; Domestic Violence/Peace Orders; and Foreclosure. Legal services to self-represented litigants will occur via walk-in assistance, phone calls, and live chat assistance, or as requested by the Court. The attorneys will also provide appropriate referrals and perform intake as well as assist in developing programmatic materials for use by self-represented litigants, the Self-Help Centers, and/or Court staff. These positions are part of a Maryland Legal Aid contract with the Administrative Office of the Courts to operate the Courts’ District Court Self-Help Centers and the Maryland Courts Self-Help Center.

Hours and Location: The staff attorneys will be required to have flexibility in location and schedule, with the expectation of a varied schedule at any of the Self-Help locations. The District Court Self-Help Centers in Upper Marlboro, Glen Burnie, and Salisbury, Maryland provide legal assistance Monday-Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. The Maryland Courts Self-Help Center in Annapolis, Maryland, provides legal assistance Monday-Friday, 8:30am to 8:00pm. The staff attorneys may be called upon to assist during other hours as needed. These are full-time positions.


Minimum Qualifications: Admitted to the Maryland Bar with one-year or more civil litigation experience. Excellent organizational, communications, and interpersonal skills required. Fluency in a second language strongly preferred. Flexibility in schedule, with ability and willingness to travel frequently between the four locations. Spanish language proficiency desirable.
