The Office of the Executive Secretary, Supreme Court of Virginia, (OES) is seeking a motivated, organized professional to provide administrative and legal research support for the Virginia Access to Justice Commission. This position will perform law-related and administrative duties for the OES, primarily related to supporting the Supreme Court’s Access to Justice Commission. The Commission was established by the Supreme Court in 2013 to promote equal access to justice in Virginia, with particular emphasis on the civil legal needs of Virginia residents.
Responsibilities include: coordinating meetings, attending meetings as needed, preparing meeting minutes, creating and maintaining documents and spreadsheets, drafting reports and correspondence, conducting legal and policy related research, and interacting with court personnel, the legal community and the public. Commission staff are responsible for staffing regular and special meetings of the Commission and its Committees (including preparing agenda packages and drafting minutes or meeting summaries), maintaining Commission and Committee files and membership information, helping develop and implement the Commission’s strategic plan, responding to questions regarding access to justice issues, and supporting the Commission’s development and implementation of projects, which may include supporting the development and maintenance of a Commission website.

Requirements: 

The successful applicant will have a strong interest in access to justice, as well as excellent organizational, technological, communication, and legal skills, along with the ability to prioritize multiple assignments. The most competitive applicant will have substantial legal and/or administrative experience, including experience supporting committees or groups, in- depth knowledge of the Virginia legal system, a strong interest in and knowledge of access to justice issues, excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, expertise in using technology to facilitate and promote access to justice initiatives and the dissemination of information, strong research and writing skills, and proficiency in office systems including Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Microsoft Office, and Adobe Acrobat. Problem-solving and research skills, flexibility, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are essential. A law degree, and active membership in the Virginia State Bar will be useful but are not a substitute for relevant experience.

Experience in managing databases, including analyzing data and generating reports is preferred.
