Position Description: 

The Legal Assistant/Intake Specialist supporting Legal Aid’s Intake and Pro Bono Programs would work as part of a dynamic team with the attorneys and other legal assistants responsible for these programs to ensure effective and efficient delivery of services. The successful candidate will want to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment that often requires multi-tasking while at the same time maintaining a high level of attention to detail.

The Legal Assistant/Intake Specialist’s responsibilities include conducting initial telephone screening of persons seeking legal assistance and providing referral information, where appropriate; assisting in the ongoing management of an online intake system; conducting telephone and in-person intakes; responding to written and email requests for assistance; ensuring that referral resources are kept up-to-date; supporting client database design and management; analyzing statistical data pulled from client database and other sources; drafting case summaries for circulation to prospective pro bono counsel; preparing case materials for referral to pro bono counsel or other legal services providers; creating PowerPoint slides for intake and pro bono program trainings and presentations; filing/copying documents at the DC Superior Court, the DC Court of Appeals, and various local agencies; assisting with recruiting and supervising student interns; preparing intake, self-help and outreach materials; providing general administrative support; and working collaboratively and effectively with co-workers to ensure coverage of administrative and paralegal needs throughout the office. (Note: As a result of the public health emergency, Legal Aid is currently operating remotely and, dependent on current circumstances, the individual hired for this position may start their employment working remotely.)

Requirements: 

The ideal applicants will have the following qualifications:

• A demonstrated commitment to social, economic, and racial justice;
• Excellent organizational skills, with attention to detail;
• Ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments;
• Effective oral communication skills, particularly telephonic communication;
• Effective written communication skills;
• Strong interpersonal skills and desire to take initiative in managing projects;
• Ability to work both independently and in collaboration with others;
• Strong computer skills including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Google applications (familiarity working with online databases helpful but not required);
• Fluency or proficiency in Spanish, Amharic or another language prevalent in Legal Aid's client community strongly preferred, but not required; and
• Availability to make a two-year commitment (minimum) strongly preferred.
