Organization: Bay Area Legal Aid's (BayLegal) mission is to provide high quality legal assistance regardless of a client's location, language, or disability. BayLegal is the largest provider of free civil legal services to low-income residents of the San Francisco Bay Area, with regional offices in seven counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara. BayLegal's over 100 staff members provide wraparound civil legal services in the areas of: housing preservation, domestic violence and sexual assault prevention, economic security, consumer protection, and healthcare access.

Position: Bay Area Legal Aid (BayLegal) is currently accepting applications for a Disability Rights Staff Attorney position in our Alameda County Office, located in Oakland.

We seek a dedicated, culturally sensitive attorney with a strong commitment to disability rights and social justice advocacy to represent individuals with mental and physical disabilities in their applications for Social Security/SSI benefits. This position includes conducting client interviews, completing social security/SSI applications, gathering supporting medical and other evidence, negotiating with governmental agencies, and representing clients at administrative hearings, before Appeals Council, and in federal District Court. The attorney may also, at times, represent clients in CalWORKs, General Assistance, Medi-Cal, IHSS, and/or other public benefits/health related matters. S/he will engage in policy work in areas that affect our clients' rights, participate in community collaborations, and engage in community outreach and education.

Requirements: 

About the Successful Candidate:
• California State Bar membership; or admitted to practice in another state and eligible to practice in California for 3 years under the California State Bar rules for the Registered Legal Services Attorney Program (must pass CA bar)
• Experience in Social Security or related advocacy preferred
• Bilingual speaker preferred
• Exceptional listener and strategist who can thrive in a collegial environment
• Sense of humor preferred
• Passion for and deep understanding of working with low-income families and communities, and specifically working with individuals with mental and physical disabilities
• Excellent communication, writing and public speaking skills
• Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic team
