Community Legal Aid (CLA) is the non-profit legal services program providing free civil legal assistance to low-income and elderly residents of central and western Massachusetts. CLA has over 100 dedicated, talented staff working across multiple offices, and a budget of over $12 million. Our core work includes effective client-centered advocacy and robust outreach to and partnerships with our client communities.

CLA seeks one or two Senior Supervising Attorneys to oversee and coordinate the work of one or more of the following practice areas: elder law (involving legal matters that most affect the health, safety, and well-being of seniors, including eviction defense and other homelessness prevention; access to Medicare and other benefits, and safety from abuse and exploitation); employment law (including unemployment benefits, wage and hour claims and discrimination); Social Security matters (for applicants for and recipients of SSI and SSDI benefits); and education law (focusing on assisting students with issues involving Individualized Education Programs; school discipline including disproportionate suspensions and expulsions of children of color; language access; and other matters specifically affecting low-income students)

The Senior Supervising Attorney(s) will directly supervise the legal work of the advocates in the various practice areas. The attorney(s) will also assist with coordinating the training of staff and the community; keep abreast of legal developments in the area of practice and serve as a legal resource for the program;and co-counsel with staff in complex and/or systemic cases. In addition, the attorney(s) will work with CLA's Managing Attorneys in conducting annual performance reviews of staff, and will assist in writing grant applications and reports.

The Senior Supervising Attorney(s) will be based in one of CLA five main offices, ( Worcester, Fitchburg, Springfield, Northampton or Pittsfield) and will travel as needed to each of CLA's other offices to meet with individual advocates and participate in unit and management meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS: Admission to the Mass. Bar or entitlement to practice under Mass. practice rule required. Must have at least seven years of experience practicing law, with significant experience in one or more of the designated practice areas. Applicants seeking to supervise the elder law practice must have significant housing litigation experience focusing on eviction defense and other landlord-tenant issues arising for elders. Experience with low-income populations; ability to relate effectively to a diverse clientele; and strong supervision and communication skills required. Salary depends on experience.
