Education Law/Disability Benefits Staff Attorney

Community Legal Aid (CLA), the free civil legal services provider for the low-income and elderly residents of central and Western Massachusetts, seeks a Staff Attorney to work in its Hampden County (Springfield) office. The attorney will assist clients seeking Social Security and SSI benefits and will also specialize in handling cases for students involving Individualized Education Programs, school discipline (including suspensions and expulsion), language access, and other issues specifically affecting low-income students. The attorney will conduct community outreach and education to inform parents, students, and other stakeholders about education-related legal rights and responsibilities. The attorney will also assist in the preparation of periodic grant reports and may attend outreach visits with potential funders.

Requirements: 

QUALIFICATIONS: Seeking an attorney who is a self-starter, works collaboratively with partners, and is comfortable with and adept at public speaking and conducting community outreach. Admission the the Mass. Bar or entitlement to practice under a Mass. practice rule is required. Prior experience advocating at administrative agencies and working on SSI or education law issues is a plus. Fluency or advance proficiency in Spanish is preferred.
