Position Description: 

Volunteer Lawyers Birmingham (VLB), a nonprofit pro bono program in Birmingham, AL, is seeking a new Executive Director. VLB matches income-qualifying residents of Jefferson County, Alabama, with volunteer attorneys to help with legal matters to meet their legal needs and improve access to justice. Executive Director

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for VLB staff, programs, expansion, fundraising and all other executive tasks necessary to VLB’s mission. The ED will carry out the Board’s vision for the organization, while demonstrating knowledge of field, core programs, operations, and business plans.

Responsibilities
• Ensure ongoing local program, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and systems; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve strategic goals
• Lead, coach, develop, and retain VLB's management team; oversee and manage legal staff and volunteers to ensure delivery of high-quality legal services
• Actively engage and energize VLB volunteers, Board members, event committees, partnering organizations, and funding sources
• Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors
• Regularly evaluate programs, so as to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the Board, funding sources, volunteers and others
• Develop and adhere to an annual budget for the organization
o Understand the fiscal responsibilities and standing of the organization to be able to clearly report to the Board
• Continue fundraising activities to support existing program operations and future expansion
• Be a local presence and communicate program results with an emphasis on the successes of the local program
• Build and retain professional relationships in the community to ensure a long-standing partnership with legal, professional, business and corporate leaders
• Ensure timely and effective preparation and/or review of state and federal grants

Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree required
• Juris Doctorate from ABA-accredited law school
• Member in good standing of the Alabama Bar; or, member in good standing of other state bar with willingness to become a member of the Alabama Bar
• 8 + years of practicing law or experience in a business or administrative role with a for-profit company or nonprofit organization
• Proven leader with a passion to grow and develop those managed
• Strong attention to detail while multi-tasking, meeting deadlines and maintaining the best interests of the organization when making decisions
• Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage, and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget
• Past success working with a Board of Directors, preferred
• Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures
• Strong written and oral communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills
• Action-oriented, mission-driven, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning
• Ability to work effectively independently and in collaboration with diverse groups of people
• Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude and self-directed
• Demonstrated understanding of the VLB’s mission and the needs and experiences of the VLB’s clients and stakeholders
• Standing and experience to ensure a strong relationship between VLB and legal, business and corporate leaders, and representatives of the state, local and federal governments, for the purposes of raising funds, attracting volunteers, retaining qualified staff, and securing resources and support for VLB and its mission
• Diversity of skills, perspectives and experiences that reflect the community VLB serves and respects the needs and experiences of VLB’s clients and stakeholders
