Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE), a non-profit regional law firm that provides high-quality legal assistance to low-income individuals and groups in Western Ohio, seeks a dynamic, creative, hardworking attorney for its Dayton office to join the Neighborhoods Bringing Urban Initiatives through Legal Development (B.U.I.L.D.) Dayton Project. The Neighborhoods B.U.I.L.D. Dayton Project promotes community power through community engagement and legal services. We assist leaders in several of Dayton’s most vulnerable neighborhoods to address community-identified issues and work with communities to develop resident-led initiatives and legal solutions to improve the quality of life in the neighborhoods.

The attorney will

• Work with team members to build relationships in identified neighborhoods and communities
• Engage with community residents to determine individual and neighborhood needs and identify legal solutions
• Provide legal representation and legal tools to low-income individuals and families in targeted neighborhoods using community lawyering strategies – can include individual hearings, transactional representation, impact litigation, and policy advocacy
• Develop and facilitate community-based legal education for residents
• Assist team in measuring the project’s impact through case and project outcome and data reports

Requirements: 

Cultural competency is valued at ABLE. The ideal applicant has practical knowledge and experience in community lawyering, or a willingness to learn and practice according to community lawyering principles. S/he/they will have experience in two or more areas of poverty law and an understanding of the socio-cultural issues experienced by people living in poverty. The attorney must have: excellent legal, organizational, and interpersonal skills; experience with case management software and Microsoft Office; experience in working in collaborative and group environments; ability to empower people to work together; ability to relate well with clients living in poverty; and a demonstrated commitment to public interest law. Some travel required. Membership in Ohio Bar or ability to be admitted by motion or temporary certification is required. Attorneys with recent bar admissions are encouraged to apply. Salary depends on experience.
