Position Description: 

Appellate Advocates is a nonprofit public defender organization, based in New York City, providing high-quality representation of individuals who have been convicted of crimes in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island and cannot afford private lawyers. We are a group of attorneys from diverse backgrounds who are experienced in criminal law and believe in fighting for every person’s constitutional right to a fair trial and in working to overturn unjust convictions and sentences. While our main work is appeals, we also represent clients in Sex Offender Registration Act hearings, reinvestigate cases and file motions for post-conviction relief with a focus on ameliorating immigration consequences, and seek to vacate convictions for victims of sex trafficking.

Requirements: 

We are seeking two Staff Attorneys to join our team immediately and four entry level attorneys for Fall 2020. Individuals with the following qualifications should apply:

• A commitment to criminal defense and social justice
• Strong research and writing skills
• Oral Advocacy Skills
• A strong interest in client-focused representation
• Criminal trial and/or appellate experience preferred
• Bi-lingual capabilities valued
• A self-directed ability to manage an active and varied caseload
• New York State bar admission, a commitment to take the July NYS Bar exam, or the ability to waive into NYS from another jurisdiction
• New York State bar admission (For immediate positions)
