Position Description: 

The Legal Fellow will work with the Legal Director, fellow attorneys, the Council’s policy team, and our legal assistant to:

• Pursue legal strategies and advocacy efforts to end family detention, including filing administrative complaints, liaising with government officials and working with the press;
• Contribute to the efforts of the CARA Family Detention Pro Bono Project on behalf of the Council;
• Represent the Council at meetings and national stakeholder phone calls related to family detention;
• Coordinate legal work nationally on family detention and other immigration law issues;
• Provide practice materials and litigation resources to immigration practitioners; and
• Help educate and mentor immigration practitioners.

This is a one-year, paid, fellowship. The position may be extended based upon performance, funding, and continued operational needs.

Requirements: 

JD degree required. At least 3 years’ experience in removal defense and/or immigration advocacy, ideally including familiarity with asylum issues.

• Working knowledge and proficiency in MSOffice Suite (specifically MSWord, MS Excel, MS Outlook, and PowerPoint).
• Spanish proficiency preferred.
