LAF is the Midwest’s largest provider of free civil legal services to people who are living in poverty or otherwise vulnerable. Our service area includes all of Cook County, and every year we advise or provide brief services or extended representation to approximately 14,000 clients who are trying to avoid unfair evictions, escape domestic violence, or obtain necessary services or benefits.
Position: LAF is seeking one part-time attorney to provide advice and brief services to low-income tenants at the Eviction Help Desk at the Markham courthouse (Cook County’s Sixth Municipal District). The Markham courthouse has two eviction courtrooms that are open every weekday morning, and most tenants who appear in these courtrooms cannot afford legal representation. The Intake Attorney will work under the supervision of the Director of the Client Screening Unit.
Responsibilities include, without limitation:
• Providing unrepresented tenants with legal advice about eviction court procedures and potential legal defenses and/or brief services (e.g., drafting basic pleadings and motions).
• Registering all Help Desk customers in LAF’s electronic case management system and using the system to document services provided.
• Identifying cases that should be referred to one of LAF’s Practice Groups for extended representation.
Qualifications: Applicants must have a J.D. degree and be a member of the Illinois Bar. A strong interest in the area of housing law, the ability to communicate effectively with clients, and the ability to work well independently in a fast-paced environment are required.
