Position Description: 

The Data Scientist will work closely with the Executive Director, Director, and supervisors to shape New York County Defender Services’ use of data to enhance client services, improve the organization’s effectiveness, and foster innovation. More specifically, the person in this role will be responsible for:

  • developing organization-wide practice goals and measures of success;
  • fostering a data-aware culture, working with staff to find ways of using data to inform daily practice;
  • designing and performing research for special projects;
  • creating and maintaining a data infrastructure and overseeing data quality assurance;
  • building connections with counterparts in other agencies to advocate for clients systemically;
  • improving access to innovative technologies and better designed tools, for better data collection and more effective, efficient services for clients; and
  • collaborating with others at NYCDS on research questions, investigating, and communicating findings in easily understandable ways.

Job Requirements:

  • Strong desire to improve the lives of New Yorkers.
  • Demonstrated experience in all phases of research and analysis, including project conceptualization, data collection planning, implementation, data management, analysis, and working with stakeholders to apply learnings.
  • Ability to present and explain information in written and oral form to diverse audiences. Ability to work collaboratively with non-technical colleagues.
  • Thorough understanding of the fundamentals of statistics, including causal inference with non-experimental data.
  • Experience with mixed methods, as well as knowledge of pros and cons of qualitative and quantitative approaches.
  • Understanding of bias and how bias is induced in data and through data analysis.
  • Programming experience in open-source statistical languages and SQL.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

  • Must have excellent interpersonal, communication, and analytical skills.
  • Background in economics, data analytics, criminology or other social science field.
  • MA and/or MS in Social Sciences preferred
  • Experience working in criminal justice or with attorneys.
  • Project management experience.
