Job Overview

Community Legal Aid SoCal (CLA SoCal) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was founded in 1958 for the purpose of providing civil legal services to low income individuals and seniors. It has two offices in Orange County and two offices in Southeast Los Angeles County. Community Legal Aid SoCal (CLA SoCal) seeks an energetic, motivated, personable and effective Staff Attorney to provide comprehensive legal services to low-income DV victims in southeast Los Angeles County.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the Directing Attorney, this position is responsible for providing legal representation, consultation, advocacy, education and referrals to victims of domestic violence in our service area. The Staff Attorney will work with victims of family violence to help them escape their abuser and get to a place of long-term safety where they can work on addressing other obstacles to well-being.

Examples of Duties

• Handle client interviews, negotiation, settlement, trial and appeal of cases in State and Federal Courts;
• Direct and supervise the Case Manager, clinical law students, and pro bono volunteers;
• Expand high-quality legal services to victims to help them escape their abusers;
• Increase collaboration by DV service providers in southeastern Los Angeles County in order to better serve family violence victims and give them more avenues by which to become safe and secure;
• Maintain an individual caseload, and refer cases that fall outside of protective order litigation to other specialized units;
• Identify wraparound legal services and work collaboratively with various legal units;
• Implement trauma-informed delivery of legal services;
• Research and prepare pleadings and other legal documents in connection with trials, hearings, and other legal proceedings;
• Developing all the protocols for the project, preparing reports and collecting and submitting all required statistical data;
• Complies with reporting requirements of relevant grants, including tracking deliverables;
• Participates in activities of community-based organizations and Bar Association activities.

Requirements: 

QUALIFICATIONS

● Active membership and good standing with the California State Bar;
● Minimum 3 years of ligation experience;
● Demonstrated knowledge of domestic violence law;
● Ability to deal with people empathetically and effectively;
● Demonstrated commitment to serving low income and the most vulnerable immigrant communities and survivors of domestic violence;
● Ability to meet grant deliverables and to prepare grant reports;
● Flexibility to work evenings and weekends to attend community events, outreach and engagement, hold and assist with legal clinics;
● Bilingual in Spanish required.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
• Knowledge of legal principles and their application.
• Knowledge of rules of evidence and the conduct of court proceedings.
• Knowledge of legal research methods.
• Proficiency in Form Builder, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, etc.) and other software programs.
