Each year LAF’s more than 80 full-time attorneys and staff help resolve civil legal problems, including domestic violence, consumer fraud, unfair evictions and improper benefit denials and terminations. Our work impacts more than
40,000 people each year.
Job Description:
LAF is seeking a supervisory attorney for the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Project within our Public Benefits Practice Group. The Ombudsman Project advocates on behalf of residents of long term care facilities.
Responsibilities:
• Supervising the project staff attorney, paralegals and intake staff.
• Represent clients in administrative hearings.
• Achieve and maintain knowledge of the various areas of law, including Nursing Home Care Act, Medicare and Medicaid laws, regulations and rules, health insurance laws, regulations and dispute resolution, and other issues facing elderly and disabled clients.
• Training staff.
• Overseeing professional development of staff.
• Maintaining a caseload of individual cases.
• Engaging in advocacy designed to have a lasting, measureable effect on our client community.
• Working with PBPG supervisors on all management efforts within the group.
• Managing grants, including assistance with grant reporting.

Requirements: 

Qualifications: Applicants must have a J.D. degree and be a member of the Illinois Bar. In addition the successful candidate will have:
• Significant litigation or administrative law experience.
• Excellent research and writing skills.
• Demonstrable ability to supervise and mentor staff.
• Strong organization skills.
• Ability to use technology creatively.
• Familiarity with long term care issues, public benefits law and/or health insurance law is not required but is preferred.
• Spanish fluency is preferred.
