Position Description: 

A trial team at the Military Commissions Defense Organization, which is essentially the public defender’s office for detainees at Guantanamo Bay, is hiring a civilian GS 15 attorney to be part of the litigation team. This team represents Nashwan al-Tamir, who is charged under the name Hadi al-Iraqi, with numerous war crimes and terrorism charges arising from events in Afghanistan in the mid 2000s. He has been held in Guantanamo Bay for more than ten years. The case involves active litigation before a Guantanamo Military Commission involving international human rights law, criminal defense, international law of war, and constitutional issues. A successful applicant will
• have five or more years of litigation experience, preferably including criminal defense, human rights, or military issues;
• be able to travel extensively, including outside the United States;
• have an open mind and a healthy sense of outrage;
• be a United States citizen;
• be able to successfully pass a background investigation and receive a TS/SCI security clearance;
• be able to work on a large team that includes both civilians and members of the military;
• have experience litigating complex cases with massive quantities of discovery.
Prior military experience and an active TS/SCI clearance are preferred. This is a full time position as a federal employee located in Crystal City, Virginia.
