LOCATION:  Washington, DC

The National Legal Aid & Defender Association (NLADA), founded in 1911, is America’s oldest and largest nonprofit association devoted to excellence in the delivery of legal services to those who cannot afford counsel.  We provide advocacy, guidance, information, training, and technical assistance for members of the equal justice community, especially those working in public defense and civil legal aid.  The Program Associate will support the execution of existing programming, including but not limited to projects funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs (OJP), Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA).  The person selected for this position will also provide logistical and administrative support to NLADA’s Defender Legal Services (DLS) division and will act as the division’s internal staff lead for external-facing, grant-funded communications.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct scans to identify and assess existing practices, needs, stakeholders, and opportunities related to, but not limited to, the provision of the Sixth Amendment right to counsel
  • Support DLS staff in the provision of training and technical assistance (TTA), including travel, logistics, and communications
  • Support the division’s ongoing in-person training commitments, including but not limited to the development of training materials, administrative support, and support to attendees
  • Support the development of a new online web platform
  • Support the development of research publications related to, but not limited to, the Sixth Amendment right to counsel.  This may include conducting legal and policy research and drafting publication content
  • Develop and distribute messaging related to the promotion of the division’s grant-funded work
  • Develop and distribute messaging related to the promotion of NLADA’s national service programming
  • Other grant-related administrative duties as assigned

ORKING ENVIRONMENT AND CONDITIONS:

  • Office located in Washington, DC
  • Ability to lift up to 10 pounds

EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS:

  • General office equipment including but not limited to:  personal computer, telephones, facsimile machine, calculator, and printer/photocopy

 

Requirements: 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Demonstrable interest in criminal law and social justice
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly and proficiently understand and absorb new information
  • Strong analytical skills; ability to structure and process large volumes of qualitative and quantitative data, draw insightful conclusions, and recommend next steps
  • Effective communication with others to achieve objectives and meet deadlines
  • Ability to manage relationships and work products through virtual and remote technology services
  • Demonstrated ability to develop a proactive communications strategy for the division’s grant-funded accomplishments, including key themes for messaging
