STAFF ATTORNEY – CRIME VICTIMS ATTORNEY
AMSTERDAM, NY OFFICE
2 POSITIONS

Responsibilities: Assertive and compassionate attorney is needed to provide high-quality, coordinated, victim-sensitive, trauma-informed civil legal services to local victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault in the Amsterdam office. Attorney will be responsible for providing advice, brief service, advocacy, and zealous representation to victims of sexual assault and/or domestic violence in a broad range of civil legal matters including orders of protection, custody, matrimonial law, child support and Title IX matters, as well as provide accompaniment, advice, counsel, and advocacy to a victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault in the investigation and/or criminal prosecution of the victim’s perpetrator, and other emergency justice-related assistance necessary to address legal issues impacting a victim’s life. Attorney will be responsible for implementation, recordkeeping, and reporting as required by the Office of Victims Services (OVS) grant. Attorney will be expected to work in coordinated partnership with local domestic violence and sexual assault service providers, by providing services to client referrals, providing emergency triage of time-sensitive matters at provider’s request, providing on-site intake at provider’s office on a regular basis, meeting with clients outside of normal business hours, as appropriate, and actively participating in local DV task forces. Attorney will attend professional development trainings as requested, provide victims of crime with informed and appropriate referrals to other services, supports and resources which may further assist the victim and attend outreach and provide community education events as requested. In addition, attorney will receive at least 15 hours of holistic crime victim training, with a focus on trauma, in either New York or nationally.

Qualifications: At least 5 years prior legal experience or equivalent is required. Admitted to New York State Bar. Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and providing high quality legal services to clients. Demonstrated commitment to sensitive and effective management of a robust litigation caseload involving traumatic circumstances. Must be assertive, compassionate, demonstrate good judgment, be highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to communicate effectively and work efficiently. Must work well both independently, with provider staff and Executive Director, and with close supervision. Must have a car and valid New York driver’s license. Excellent computer, research, and writing skills required. Prior experience in high quality representation of victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault or other crimes in Family Court or relevant experience. Ability to speak Spanish a plus.

Program Profile: The Legal Aid Society is a non-profit law firm which provides free civil legal services to low-income individuals.

Salary: $46,307 to $66,016 Unionized program, with excellent fringe benefits. May be eligible for Loan Repayment Assistance Program.
