Position Description: 

New Hampshire Legal Assistance (NHLA) seeks a dynamic individual for the position of Staff Attorney to handle public benefits and housing cases for low-income residents of Coös County, NH. This staff position will be based in Coös County at a location to be determined.

Responsibilities: Represent low-income clients/tenants in housing law cases in court and in administrative hearings, including through NHLA’s Fair Housing Project; community outreach and education. Also represent low-income individuals in public benefits cases, such as food stamps, TANF, disability, and Medicaid. Workload may also include handling cases in other practice areas. Travel within the state and to national conferences will be necessary.

Background: Recognized nationally for our achievements, NHLA has a proud history of aggressive, creative advocacy for low-income and elderly clients in federal and state courts, as well as legislative and administrative forums. Because NHLA does not receive federal Legal Services Corporation (LSC) funding, we are not subject to LSC’s restrictions on lobbying, class action litigation or welfare reform work. NHLA’s resources are primarily focused on housing, health, income benefits, elder law, domestic violence, and public utilities. NHLA operates five branch law offices and a number of statewide projects. NHLA’s Fair Housing Project has been in operation for over 20 years representing clients who have been victimized by discrimination as well as providing fair housing training and systemic advocacy.

Requirements: 

Qualifications: New Hampshire license or willingness to take the next scheduled bar examination, or eligibility for admission on motion. Strong oral and written communication and community outreach skills; a team player who can also work independently. Must be detail-oriented and demonstrate initiative. Preference is given to those demonstrating a commitment to civil rights, economic justice and working with low-income people. Knowledge of housing, fair housing, and or public benefits law a plus. Bilingual/bicultural a plus.
