Position Description: 

Position: Full Time Managing Attorney – ILS Lafayette office.

This position offers an opportunity for someone committed to poverty law and equal access to justice. ILS is a non-profit law firm that provides free legal assistance throughout Indiana to low income people in civil matters. The successful applicant will work in an environment that encourages all staff members to creatively seek ways of accomplishing our mission: to use the law to fight poverty, empower clients, and improve access to justice.

Organizational information: The Lafayette office provides a full range of free civil legal services to clients who qualify, pursuant to the ILS eligibility guidelines, in areas such as family, consumer, housing, health, and income maintenance. It serves clients who reside in a 14-county service area. ILS has 8 offices located throughout Indiana. ILS is funded by the Legal Services Corporation (LSC), the Indiana Civil Legal Aid Fund, United Ways, Area Agencies on Aging and approximately 20 other funding sources.

Responsibilities:
• Supervise 6 staff including 2 attorneys, office manager, and support staff, including supervising legal work and intake, holding staff meetings, administering performance reviews, distributing work, and fostering growth and development.
• Serve as a primary representative of ILS in the community.
• Develop partnerships and working relationship with organizations in the service area.
• Maintain a caseload.
• Ensure that office operates in compliance with all relevant statutes, rules, and grant requirements.
• Limited grant application and grant management responsibilities.
• Work closely with ILS administration and other managing attorneys and foster collaboration with ILS staff across the state.
• Act as liaison between ILS administration and local staff.

Compensation: Salary is commensurate with experience. ILS offers an excellent fringe benefits package including health insurance (medical, dental, vision, Rx), disability insurance, life insurance, a 401k plan, a flex benefit plan, and generous vacation and sick leave. The attorney may be eligible for the ILS loan repayment assistance program (LRAP) as well as the Indiana Bar Foundation LRAP, LSC LRAP, College Cost Reduction Access Act and Higher Education Opportunity Act LRAP. ILS will pay up to $2,500 in moving expenses if the successful applicant needs to move from another city.

Requirements: 

Qualifications:
• Dedication to the mission of Indiana Legal Services.
• Leadership and supervision skills.
• Licensed to practice law in Indiana or able to become licensed by reciprocity or taking the next Indiana bar exam.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Negotiation skills and litigation skills.
• Ability to work as a team member.
• Minimum of 4 years legal experience; prefer practice experience in family law, consumer law, government benefits including TANF, Medicaid, NSAP, SSI and SSD, and landlord tenant defense.
• Second language preferred.
• Knowledge of poverty law preferred.
