Position Description:

Do you believe in the importance of civic freedoms and want to support them by working with the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of association and assembly? The International Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ICNL) is looking for an experienced and highly motivated researcher to help us do just that.

ICNL promotes the freedoms of association, assembly, and expression and supports civil society, civic participation, and philanthropy in countries around the world.

The Research Associate is a full-time position based in our Washington, DC office. As a member of ICNL’s Global Programs team, the Research Associate will lead research efforts that contribute to the work of the UN Special Rapporteur (UNSR) on association and assembly and other UNSRs on civic freedom related topics. The job is best suited to someone creative and flexible, who is comfortable with multi-tasking and able to manage large amounts of information with great attention to detail. Travel will be required.

Under the direction of ICNL’s VP-Legal Affairs, the Research Associate will:
• Provide research support for UNSRs on the priority themes of their mandates relating to civic freedoms and civil society;
• Investigate cutting-edge issues related to civil society, such as the tactics and equipment used by law enforcement to police assemblies, the exercise of the freedoms of association and assembly in the digital space, and the importance of civic freedoms in the realization of the UN Sustainable Development Goals;
• Monitor emerging global and regional trends on the use of constitutional provisions, legislation, and administrative policies and practices to restrict civic space;
• Assist in organizing consultations and expert meetings to inform the thematic research of UNSRs;
• Accompany UNSRs and/or ICNL staff to official UN sessions, to international conferences, and on country missions.

Requirements:

• Relevant degree from an accredited university (law degree preferred);
• At least four years of relevant research experience preferred;
• Excellent research, writing, and presentation skills;
• Good knowledge of UN human rights mechanisms, preferably including knowledge or experience of standards and mandates relevant to special procedures;
• Fluency in English is required (French proficiency is an advantage);
• Experience working with civil society, government, or an international organization is an advantage.

The Research Associate must possess legal authorization to work in the US.

To apply:

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis. Please send a cover letter, a CV, and a writing sample (preferably a published work) to [email protected]. The subject line should state “Civic Freedoms Research Associate.” Only finalists will be contacted. No phone calls please. ICNL is an equal opportunity employer.
